Over the past few months, members of our congregation have been the target of what is
called a phishing attack. Phishing is a type of social engineering attack designed to get
access or money. With artificial intelligence being commonplace these attacks are only
going to become more common and sophisticated.

Here is an acronym to help you identify attacks: P.H.I.S.H
P – Pressure / Urgency (“Act now or lose your account!”, “Can you do me a favor?”)
H – Hidden or fake sender (wrong email, phone number, look-alike domain)
I – Impersonation (pretends to be your pastor. bank, boss, Apple, etc.)
S – Suspicious links or attachments
H – Harvests your secrets (passwords, 2FA codes, SSN, gift cards)

Quick Checklist You Can Use Every Time. Ask yourself:
1. Did I expect this message?
2. Is the sender’s email/phone number exactly, correct?
3. Does the link URL match the o icial website when I hover (or type it manually)?
4. Are they asking for passwords or payment over email/text?
5. Is there urgency or a threat?
If the answer to any of the last four is “yes,” it’s almost certainly phishing.

If you do receive an alert that you want to verify, do not follow links that were sent, instead
go to the source directly. For example, if you get an alert from your bank about a suspicious
purchase, do not follow the links in the email or text, instead in a new window or tab go to
your bank’s website and login. If your bank calls you, hang up and call the bank with their
number on their public site.
